My Future as a Professional Engineer

In order to become a Professional Engineer, you need to:

• complete four-year college degreee
• work under a Professional Engineer for at least four years
• pass two intensive competency exams
• earn a license from the state's licensure board

Professional Engineers are different than engineers because they can sign and seal, and submit plans or drawings to public authorities for approval. They are also responsible for themselves but also the people affected by their work. Professional engineers are also in charge and responsible for the work of their employees for legal purposes. Finally, Professional engineers can teach and train other engineers since most states require the teachers to be licensed.

It is important to become a professional engineer for those who want the power and authority to make a difference. Although many people can make a difference as an engineer, professionals have the capabilities to do more and with less restrictions since they are in charge.
